On Saturday 19th August, the world comes together in support of World Humanitarian Day, a day dedicated to honouring people and organisations who embody the spirit of selflessness and compassion. At REACT Disaster Response, we stand shoulder to shoulder with communities in crisis, reaffirming our commitment to the values that guide us. No matter who, no matter where #NoMatterWhat.
What is World Humanitarian Day?
On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating the date as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.
Watch our video to hear what some of our team have to say about being a humanitarian:
In the face of disaster, REACT’s volunteers and supporters have consistently demonstrated the power of humanity. From volunteering to support people in the UK through the COVID pandemic, to making a donation or deploying in the wake of the Turkey earthquakes, the actions of the REACT community have made a tangible impact on countless lives.
This WHD, we want to thank each person who has contributed to our mission and to ask you to keep doing what you are doing. Share our stories, be the first to raise your hand when we need a volunteer, make a donation or organise a fundraiser. Above all, on this World Humanitarian Day - do something #NoMatterWhat.
