REACT’s advance team in Bangkok has both grown and divided, in order to accelerate reconnaissance efforts and assess potential border crossings into Myanmar. Responders Lizzy Stileman and Caroline O’Callaghan have been joined by an additional Responder and medic Matt Ladbrook, and REACT’s International Operations Manager Paul Taylor.

This morning, Lizzy and Paul flew north to Chiang Mai to assess the feasibility of accessing the country via border points near Chiang Rai. Meanwhile, Matt Ladbrook and Caroline O’Callaghan have headed west by road toward Khao Laem National Park, following up intelligence on an alternative route.

These next 48 hours are critical.

The team is liaising closely with NGO partners on both sides of the border, including Human Initiative and CPI (Community Partners International), who are actively working inside Myanmar and providing detailed assessments of urgent needs which include:

  • Shelter (tarpaulins, blankets, mats, bed nets)
  • Hygiene and sanitation kits
  • Safe water and water storage
  • Food and nutritional support
  • Medical care and essential medicines
  • Power

In Mandalay, the need is staggering.

Daw Hnin Hnin Yee, 72, described her fear as her building shook violently during the quake. “I was very scared. I worry the building might collapse,” she said. Now in a temporary camp, she adds, “We cannot cook, it’s too hot. We need medicine.”

Our teams are doing everything possible to gain access—and when the door opens, we must be ready to move fast.
