Earlier in December, two REACT Responders participated in an annual conference organised by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). The conference brings together stakeholders from across the region to discuss collaborative approaches to disaster preparedness, response, and resilience.
Responders Jill Hamlin and Bill Moore REACT’s were first on the ground after Hurricane Beryl tore through islands in July. Their attendance at this year's conference reinforces our commitment to understanding how we can better support disaster response in The Caribbean by developing partnerships and leveraging regional expertise to enhance existing disaster response capabilities. During the conference, our team engaged in critical discussions with regional leaders and exchanged best practices, exploring innovative strategies to improve community resilience against natural disasters.
Key Takeaways from #CDM13
- The Call for Resilience Starts Early
Building capacity before disasters strike is essential to ensure communities can withstand and recover from crises like hurricanes and earthquakes. This proactive approach continues to guide REACT’s focus on disaster readiness. - Expanding the Disaster Management Lens
The Caribbean is preparing for a broader spectrum of threats, including biosecurity risks, mental health challenges, and leveraging advanced technologies like drones. These innovations are transforming how we anticipate and respond to crises. - Youth Education as a Game Changer
Involving young people in disaster preparedness and response was a recurring theme. Empowering the next generation is not just about education—it’s an investment in their resilient future and a more prepared society. - Collaboration and Sustainable Transitions
Working within existing structures while ensuring local voices take centre stage is vital. Planning clear transitions is key to long-term recovery and sustainability in every mission.
What’s Next for REACT in The Caribbean?
These insights reinforce our dedication to addressing the growing challenges posed by the climate crisis. Our next steps involve:
- Deepening Partnerships: Formalising collaborations with regional agencies to strengthen and support existing disaster response capabilities.
- Scaling Capacity Building: Integrating lessons learned to enhance preparedness in vulnerable communities.
- Advocating for Collaboration: Encouraging cross-sector cooperation to tackle emerging threats.
As demand for disaster response grows, REACT remains committed to ensuring no one is left behind. Through shared learning and collaboration, we are helping communities face an uncertain future with strength and purpose.
