Hurricane Beryl - the earliest and most powerful storm of the season - slammed into the Caribbean on July 1, 2024, with winds reaching 130 mph. It was unclear the extent of the damage, so we swiftly deployed teams to support local and international relief efforts.
Our Responders completed their reconnaissance missions and supported the distribution of vital aid, working alongside the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination and the World Food Programme.
This is what our office prepares for. This is what our Responders train for. We anticipated the demand, and we were ready.
As a leading humanitarian organisation, we prepared for this moment. Our Responders underwent rigorous training, anticipating the increased risk of severe weather events. When the call came, we acted swiftly.
Our Response:
β
Deployed a REACT team to assess immediate humanitarian needs.
β
Engaged in productive meetings with Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the UK High Commission.
β
Supported effective aid distribution and volunteer efforts in Union Island in partnership with WFP and UNDAC.
It was reassuring to see such a rapid response from the humanitarian community, as we saw many of our friends come together. Especially glad to see our friends MapAction, National Emergency Management Organisation, World Central Kitchen.
