Overview of the Situation
Flooding began to pose a significant threat to the Billing Aquadrome site on Tuesday 24th September, prompting its management to activate their evacuation plan. Multiple local agencies, including Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, and West Northamptonshire Council, were mobilised to aid the response efforts. In coordination with these agencies, REACT is providing support by running an emergency rest centre at the Lings Forum Leisure Centre for displaced individuals, ensuring they have access to shelter, resources, and care.
The local council posted an urgent update on its website, stating that multiple agencies were collaborating to manage the crisis at Billing Aquadrome. This coordinated effort was anchored at the Fire Service Joint Command Unit, where representatives from all major response organisations worked together to monitor the situation and prepare for further emergencies.
REACT’s Role and the Broader Response
Working alongside volunteers from British Red Cross, REACT Responders are focussing on the welfare of vulnerable evacuees. The flooding, while exacerbated by recent weather conditions, came after a dry day. However, standing water and localised flooding on many roads created hazardous conditions throughout the region.
Throughout the evening, all agencies involved maintained a presence at the Aquadrome to ensure the safety of those affected and monitor the evolving situation. This multi-agency effort highlights the importance of collaboration and readiness during times of crisis.
Advice to the Public
As the flooding situation remains dynamic, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and to follow safety guidance. This includes staying updated on flood alerts and road conditions via official social media channels and the Environment Agency.
