REACT is monitoring the current situation in Venezuela very closely, following the devastating 7.2 & 7.5 magnitude earthquakes which struck around a minute apart on Wednesday 24 June 2026. The second earthquake is understood to be the strongest to hit Venezuela since 1900. Latest reports indicate at least 920 people have been killed and 3,600 injured according to officials, with many more feared dead and others left homeless or too afraid to remain in damaged buildings. This has been followed by a number of severe aftershocks.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, particularly in collapsed buildings in Caracas and the state of La Guaira, where people have reportedly been heard calling for help from under the debris. Reports also suggest that hospitals in affected areas are under severe pressure, with urgent need for medical supplies.
Responders readying to deploy at a moments notice
The humanitarian picture is further complicated by the political and operating environment in Venezuela. The impact of the earthquakes is being felt against an already complex backdrop, and access is currently the key challenge. At this stage, we understand that regional agencies and the US have been formally requested only.
REACT has stood up an initial recce team ready to respond, should clearance be granted by the Venezuelan government along with a clear, appropriate and accessible route for REACT to add value to the response
Our focus now is on establishing the level of humanitarian need, the operating environment, access routes, and where gaps may exist in the wider response.
As always, our approach will be needs-led. We will only move where there is a clear role for REACT, where access is viable, and where our capability can provide practical support to affected communities.
