Early in the morning of Sunday, 2 July 2023, David embarked on a unique and daring mission to cycle up Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. David’s endeavour was more than just a physical challenge; it was a passionate attempt to raise funds for REACT.

After setting up camp the previous night to secure an early start, he was at the foot of the mountain by 5 am, abiding by the voluntary cycling agreement, which restricts cycling between 10 am and 5 pm. With his trusty support crew and safety cover (his wife, Jan), David started his uphill journey from Llanberis, navigating a winding path that was soon to test his limits.

The journey began on a solid path with a few tricky elements, but soon he faced very steep and rocky sections that required carrying his bike. The rideable sections that followed offered brief respites before the rugged terrain demanded he shoulder his 14 kg bike again, climbing the steep rocky steps to the summit. As he reached the summit, 1085 metres above sea level, the walkers descending from their first summit of the Three Peaks Challenge cheered him on, celebrating his incredible feat.

David's ascent time clocked in at approximately 1 hour 40 minutes, far quicker than expected. However, Snowdon's characteristic chill, intensified by wind and mist, meant there was little time for relaxation at the summit. David plunged downhill after a quick photo to commemorate the moment and donning his knee pads.

While offering the thrill of speed, the descent brought its own challenges, especially in the form of steep and rocky zigzags where David was forced to carry his bike yet again. Despite these obstacles, once he cleared the zigzags, it was pure mountain biking bliss with fast-flowing bends and an adrenaline-pumping speed that topped 50km/h in places. All too soon, the adventure concluded as he hit the road at the bottom of the mountain.

David completed the 13km journey, with about 900m of ascent, in a total time of 2 hours and 31 minutes. Bruised, battered, and aching but jubilant, he reflected on how his performance was a significant improvement from his last ride up Snowdon over 30 years ago!

His relentless determination and spirit serve as a testament to the heart of every REACT member. It's about pushing limits, enduring discomfort, and confronting challenges head-on, all to aid those in need. David's inspiring ride up Snowdon is a stirring reminder of what we're capable of when we put our minds to it, especially when driven by a noble cause.

David, we applaud your dedication, your resilience, and your significant contribution to REACT. Here's to many more thrilling rides and selfless acts of kindness!
