Morocco Earthquake Appeal
A devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco last week, at a time when most people were at home and asleep in their beds. Almost 3,000 men, women and children are reported to have died. Many more have been injured and countless homes destroyed.
Located less than 50 miles to the south of Marrakesh, some of the worst affected areas are remote villages, high up in the Atlas Mountains. These villages have proven hard to reach, some only accessible by helicopter after the earthquake destroyed roads and bridges.
At the moment, people are in desperate need of emergency sanitation and shelter, as the nights become colder.
After sleeping in a makeshift shelter, the joy and relief on Aicha’s face was clear when she learned that she was to be given one of the six tents that REACT were supplying and erecting in her village. The team, including neighbours and keen local children, had barely finished putting the tent up when she began moving her bedding in. A couple of wooden pallets to keep the mattress off the cold ground and a stove amongst the basics for her to be able to sleep more soundly tonight.
We need your help to provide shelter for people like Aicha.
A tent that can sleep a family of 5 people costs £170.
